This year, our Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) celebrates 10 years of supporting civil society organizations advocating for public health policies that reduce death and disease around the world. To mark this milestone, we're introducing the Global Health Advocacy Changemaker Award, which recognizes a public health leader from a low- or middle-income country.
We’re thrilled to present our inaugural Global Health Advocacy Changemaker Award to Yessika Hoyos Morales of Colombia. Ms. Hoyos will be honored at our 2024 Youth Advocates of the Year Awards will be held on May 9 at the National Portrait Gallery & Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
About Yessika Hoyos Morales
Yessika Hoyos Morales is a human rights lawyer and president of the José Alvear Restrepo Lawyers Collective (Cajar), one of the most respected human rights organizations in Colombia. Ms. Hoyos and Cajar also work to defend communities and subnational territories against threats posed by corporations. Working with GHAI and other Food Policy Program partners, they have challenged unethical practices of the food industry and advocated for the adoption and implementation of healthy food policies without industry interference.
Ms. Hoyos and Cajar, along with other civil society organizations and allies, have successfully advocated for policies including front-of-package warnings and health taxes on ultra-processed products and sugary drinks. Cajar has also led successful legal efforts before Colombia’s highest court, the Constitutional Court, to uphold the health tax and to prevent the weakening of conflict-of-interest regulations for legislators.
Facing security threats and smear campaigns from powerful entities, Ms. Hoyos and Cajar remain committed to their mission. Cajar continues its work to fight for truth and justice, and they remain steadfast in countering industry efforts to undermine healthy, sustainable food systems in Colombia and other countries.
Ms. Hoyos’ work continues the legacy of her father, a renowned labor activist who fought for justice and peace in Colombia. She mentors and trains legal assistants at Cajar, building a sustainable cadre of human rights defenders. Under her leadership, Cajar continues to receive national and international recognition for its defense of human rights and peace building. Her commitment to justice and her courage in confronting violence make her an inspiring leader for future generations.
