The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) announced its participation in the newly formed Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative launched at the 2024 G20 Summit in Brazil. This collaborative platform made up of 88 countries and 67 organizations will address the growing global crises of hunger and poverty through sustainable, large-scale, and integrated solutions.

Our Vice President of Food and Nutrition Verónica Schoj and Brazil In-Country Coordinator Vanessa Melo Rodrigues represented GHAI at the G20 social summit, where they had the opportunity to contribute to the development of its foundational document. GHAI was also invited to join the Alliance formally, underscoring our longstanding commitment to addressing structural poverty through country-led interventions aligned with the Alliance’s objectives.

The Alliance will serve as a global mechanism to promote and implement evidence-based policy instruments and programs that tackle poverty, hunger and inequality. It builds on a policy basket approach, offering proven interventions to enhance social protection, food security and economic resilience. The initiative highlights the need for integrated strategies across all levels to address interconnected global challenges. Key areas of intervention include:

  • Poverty reduction and social protection programs.
  • Support for family farmers and smallholders through finance and agricultural inputs.
  • Nutrition education and access to healthy diets.
  • Promotion of gender equality and decent work in the agri-food sector.

GHAI recognizes that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities)—requires bold, coordinated action. This partnership enables GHAI to collaborate with governments, civil society and other Alliance members to amplify its impact in these areas.

The Alliance’s focus on large-scale, country-owned solutions aligns with GHAI’s mission to support equitable policies that prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable populations.

Through this partnership, GHAI committed to:

  1. Provide technical assistance: Co-creating solutions with governments and civil society to adopt and scale effective policy instruments free from conflict of interest with the food and beverage industry.
  2. Advance social protection programs: Including school meal programs, homegrown feeding initiatives and public procurement of healthy foods.
  3. Promote healthy diets: Through front-of-package warning labels, sweetened beverage and ultra-processed taxes and marketing restrictions on unhealthy food and beverages.
  4. Empower local farmers: Encouraging farm-to-table initiatives and supporting smallholders’ access to markets.

As the Alliance gears up for its next milestones, including the 2025 G20 Summit in South Africa, its members will focus on scaling effective interventions and fostering knowledge exchange. GHAI will work to advance civil society participation and ensure that collective action translates into measurable progress on the ground.

The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty represents an unprecedented opportunity to drive meaningful change at scale. For GHAI, this partnership underscores the importance of shared learning, collaboration and inclusive action in addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
