Phillip Mokoena is the South Africa country coordinator for the Food Policy program. He supports partners in implementing evidence-based advocacy campaigns to reduce the high prevalence of non-communicable diseases in South Africa through policy reforms and countering industry interference. Phillip is a public health activist with 14 years of experience on public health and human rights issues in South Africa, where he has worked with diverse social movements including Treatment Action Campaign and ActionAid South Africa and health systems strengthening institutions such as Beyond Zero and mothers2mothers. Throughout his career he has helped to establish and strengthen grassroots movements, develop policy within the health sector, support institutions in strategic planning design and operationalisation and build strong multi-sector coalitions and strategic partnerships. He has served in a number of technical committees at national, regional and international levels including WHO, SANAC, SADC and the International Budget Accountability Partnerships, and he has provided technical support to the South African Department of Health.
