We advance policy advocacy campaigns to create healthy, sustainable food systems and defend everyone’s right to nutritious food. We build movements to reduce the demand for unhealthy, ultra processed products and to increase access to nutritious food.
Globally there has been an influx of ultra-processed products, which have negatively impacted diets and increased the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, among others. To shift these alarming trends, GHAI works with civil society organizations to push for mandatory policies that reduce the consumption of ultra-processed food and beverages.
Government must guarantee equitable access to nutritious food for all, particularly for vulnerable groups. GHAI promotes and protects policies that increase the offer, availability and affordability of healthy food in a sustainable and environmental friendly manner.
Vested commercial interests actively block or undermine healthy food policies. GHAI protects food policies by holding the ultra-processed products industry accountable for the health and environmental damage they cause.
Locally-led advocacy campaigns supported by the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) have contributed to the adoption and strengthening of sweetened beverage (SB) taxes in Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and South Asia. The lessons learned from these campaigns are being applied by advocates around the world to counter the threat caused by SBs in their countries and generate new government revenues.
The Philippines mandated the elimination of industrially produced trans fat from its food supply – a policy supported by local civil society advocates working in partnership with the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI).
Brazil approved strict limits on trans fat in food following strategic advocacy led by local civil society organizations supported by the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI).
